Some thoughts on cinnamon
So, my friend mentioned she adds cinnamon to her oats because she had heard it speeds up metabolism, and then asked for my thoughts. This is a condensed version of the reliable info out on the WWW. Which turns out isn't that much, but without further ado, I give you:
The GOODS:
*Cinnamon contains polyphenols, antioxidants that create healthier arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
*Cinnamon may help wit Type II diabetes blood sugar control, and may significantly lower cholesterol.
(This is likely where the speedy metabolism bit plays in, as it helps with insulin resistance)
*Cinnamon is an excellent source of manganese, dietary fiber, iron and calcium.
*Cinnamon aroma may improve memory and performance of certain tasks.
THE (sorta) BADS:
*Recent studies show conflicting results regarding the effect on cinnamon on blood sugar levels.
*Large amounts of cinnamon may result in liver damage.
MY true OPINION:
It seems more evidence-based research is needed to determine the effectiveness of cinnamon in lowering blood sugar. But, in the meantime, using cinnamon in amounts commonly found in foods(1/2 t - 1 1/2 t/day) is considered safe...and cinnamon is an easy, (almost!) calorie-free way to add variety and flavor to your foods.
So...I say sprinkle on, but not by the heapfuls.
AND some of my fave ways to use CINNAMON:
*Add to hot oatmeal or cold cereal
*Sprinkle into pancake batter
*Mix with peanut butter and spread onto apple slices.
*Stir into vanilla/plain yogurt.
*Sprinkle over sweet potatoes or carrots.
*Add to a store-bought rub for grilled chicken or pork.
*Toss with raw nuts.
*Sprinkle straight into your coffee or tea.
What about you? Any ideas that I'm missin' out on? I'd love to try...

I've sprinkled in on buttered toast with a little bit of white sugar...so bad for me, but sometimes you just need a doughnut and there's not one around. So you make a fake doughnut :)
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, I can relate to that one! When I was little I'd dip my finger in butter and then in cinnamon n' sugar. Now THAT's not good for you. But I was little and can't be blamed. ;)
ReplyDeleteCinnamon is so good. I'll have to try the peanut butter mix. Thx for sharing. You have the most interest information. And Healthy too.
