Dave's Wish List: A Floor Bed

One of my favorite times of day is when Dave and I are dozing off to bed.  Probably cuz it's one of the times we actually get to see each other  and one of the times we aren't distracted by other things.  Usually he ends up saying something silly to get me giggling--occasionally, I'll say something funny to get him going too.  But, sometimes, out pops a factoid so random, so remote, that I lay awake longer than I'd like, pondering how in earth anyone could know that and then know that and remember that, and then know that, remember that, and spew it out at 12:30 am on a work night.

Our condensed conversation from the other night.

D: Ah, so nice to be back in our own bed.
Me: Yeah?  You didn't like the king?
D: Well that was nice, but the bed was so high off the ground.  If I had my way, I'd have a bed like John's in Help!...

silence (because I have no idea what he's talking about and think he'll continue, but always forget that he likes being prompted.  Just admit it, Dave)

Me: Annnnnd, what was his bed like?
D: His bed was built into the floor.
Me: Ick, I don't think I'd like that much at all.

D: Ya know, 2 religions believe it's better to sleep close to the ground.

silence. blank stare (only he can't see cuz it's dark yo!).

Me: Annnd, what religions are those?
D:  Hindu & Shinto.

again more silence

Me: Annnnnd why is that?

D:  Well there's 2 reasons: 1) when you sleep close to the Earth, you reconnect with the Earth. And 2) In the morning when you wake, you get "up"--so you greet the day in a positive motion--getting "up" to greet the day, instead of getting "down".

Which I suppose is an idea I could get down with, but I still don't think I'd like to sleep on the floor.

Ya know, there was a point in time when I considered myself the "smart" one in this relationship.  But, now I don't think so.  If this conversation was reversed, I guarantee you that instead of giving the 2 reasons, I'd say something like, "I can't remember why, but the reasoning was cool and it made sense."

  2. I LOVE John's bed in "Help!" I saw it with my sister yeeears ago and ever since then, I've thought that an in-the-floor bed would be so cool. Ridiculously impractical--can you imagine having a walking child around? Or making the bed, changing the sheet? But fun.
